EAGLES 2010 OFF-SEASON MOVES
After another year full of false hopes dashed by a stinker in the playoffs all around has us Eagles fans thinking about next year. Here is where I think our team stacks up at each position and what we should do in the draft and free agency:
OFFENSE
QB: GM Tom Heckert just left Philly for Cleveland, and the Browns need
a QB in the worst way. Plus their "football Czar" Mike Holmgren wants
the west coast offense put in, so we should trade McNabb to Cleveland for 1st
& 3rd round draft picks. Then we can finally give Kevin Kolb his chance.
We didn't pick him with our first overall pick (2nd round, but still) a few
years back for him to never be "the guy" and he showed up that he can play
this year when McNabb was hurt. We have all young, solid weapons on offense to
grow with him, so let the future be now. Otherwise, unless we can get a 2nd
round pick for him then keep Vick to be our backup QB and to run the Wild
Eagle again, and draft a young guy on the 2nd day as a project player.
RB: For safety reasons I think #36 needs to hang em' up right now.
Westbrook was my favorite player of the last decade, but I don't want to see a
nasty situation over the team asking him to take a big pay cut since he's no
longer the feature back (see Dawkins, Brian). Lesean McCoy is ready to be "The
guy" next year, and with a healthy dose of Leanord Weaver mixed in, along with
Eldra Buckley plus whoever we can grab with the extra 3rd round pick we get
for McNabb, we'll be set at running back.
FB: After a Pro-bowl season, we need to lock up Weaver long-term
YESTERDAY!!! He's a monster, and relatively young, so re-sign him quick!!!!
WR: Desean Jackson is a monster Wide out already, starting in the Prow
Bowl, and Jeremy Maclin is also a star in the making after having killed it
vs. Dallas in the playoff loss. I actually think that by the end of next
year Maclin will line up at #1 and Desean will move to the #2 spot because
Maclin has better proto-typical WR size, and plus #10 can abuse most teams #1
CB's, let alone obliterate any teams second Corners. Jason Avant is good in
the slot and can stay there for a bit, but long term he’s better as a
situational player and our #4 WR. We need to draft a BIG Wide Receiver (i'm
talking 6'3 or up) to work his way up to be our #3 when he's ready, and this
draft there will be a lot of good WR’s available in the 3rd round. Then we can
trade Kevin Curtis or Reggie Brown for a 5th round pick and release the other
one, then find a nice systems guy to be our emergency 5th wide out (i.e. like
Hank Baskett started out as)
TE: Brent Celek is a stud and a Pro-Bowler in the making at Tight End,
the Eagles supposedly really like late season addition Martin Rucker, and
rookie Cornelius Ingram was on IR all season but has the makings of being a
another weapon for us when he gets healthy.
LT: Jason Peters is entrenched at starting RT (though needs to be
coached up, tooooo many penalties); King Dunlap has backup potential, but
either him or Mike McGlynn needs to go and be replaced by a rookie project
player on the 2nd day of the draft.
LG: Todd Herremans fought through early season injuries and had another
fantastic year, so he's also sticking as a starter here. After 2 years of
being a healthy scratch, Mike McGlynn is either ready to contribute as a
backup or he will be gone.
C: Jamal Jackson was the glue for our O-line all year, and after he
went on IR we got killed in back to back games by Dallas and couldn't block
anyone. If Jamal can't return fast enough from his injury, Nick Cole can begin
the year as the starter (he'll benefit from a full off-season of practicing at
Center) until Jackson is full ready to return to his starting role.
RG: Please please PLEASE....for the love of
GOD/JESUS/MUHAMMAD/BUDDHA/MOSES ETC...let SHAWN Andrews be 100% ready to play
next year so he can return to his dominant, Pro-Bowl Caliber form and re-take
his starting RG spot. Max Jean-Gilles looked overmatched vs. Dallas in the
playoffs, but he's a solid backup guard and situational run blocker.
RT: The biggest positive surprise of this year for the Eagles was
former 2nd round pick Winston Justice, who most left for dead and figured
wouldn't make the team this season, finally coming into his own. He was
rewarded for his strong play with a new contract and he's our starting RT for
next year and many more years to come. Last years big free agent signing Stacy
Andrews was a bust all season, but he can stay as a backup Guard/Tackle if he
takes a pay cut, otherwise send him packing and we'll draft someone else on
the 2nd day.
DEFENSE
LE: In a deep defensive draft and with no massive holes, we can use our
#1 draft pick on a dominant D-End prospect to put opposite stud Trent Cole.
Coming off a solid year, incumbent Juqua Parker can start next year if the
rookie needs to ease into the starting job, but hopefully not. We can also try
to give former starting LB Chris Gocong a chance at defensive end as a
situational pass-rusher, because he wasn't made to be a 4-3 OLB, but he better
get after QB's. Otherwise, he can be cut along with Chris Clemons and Victor
Abiamiri, who both suck and have been busts.
RE: Trent Cole is a Top 5 defensive end in the NFL and is our man for
the present and the future. Darren Howard & Jason Babin provided great depth
last year and can continue doing that next season as well.
DT: Brodrick Bunkley & Mike Patterson both proved to be forces in the
middle, so we are set with them as the Starters. Rookie Antonio Dixon was a
great pickup before Week 1 when the Redskins cut him, as he contributed all
year and is great in our rotation. Former 2nd round pick Trevor Laws is
a bumb and should be cut after being a healthy scratch nearly ever game this
season, and we can draft another DT in the middle rounds to replace him.
LOLB: Will Witherspoon played great after coming over in a mid-season
trade with the Rams and he will start at LOLB next year for us. He's a
dual threat, capable of covering Tight ends as well as good at blitzing off
the edge. Rookie Moise Fokou got starters reps late this season and can
provide us some solid depth, plus play in Nickel passing Situations next year.
MLB: Stud MLB Stewart Bradley will be back from injury next season and
better than ever. Jeremiah Trotter will most likely retire again, leaving us
with the option to keep the better player out of Joe Mays or Omar Gaither as
Bradley's primary backup. If we get that additional #1 pick by trading McNabb,
we can try to snag a high grade Linebacker with our #2 pick, someone like
Brandon Spikes. Stewart Bradley might be better suited for the Outside long
term if the defensive personnel allows it.
ROLB: Akeem Jordan was our best linebacker over the course of this
entire season despite getting nicked up, and he will return to his full
dominating form starting on the Right side next year. Tracy White had a great
season on Special Teams and as our Nickel LB and will continue in both roles
next year.
CB: Asante Samuels & Sheldon Brown made a great tandem this year, but
Sheldon played nicked up far too often and has lost half a step (not to
mention his contract issue...we have to give him props for playing this year
out despite feeling underpaid, but he won’t do that again). If healthy I’d
like us to keep Ellis Hobbs as our nickel guy, as he’s still young and has
tons of high level starting experience, but more than likely he’ll go
elsewhere in Free Agency so we'll have Joselio Hanson stay as our nickel guy
to start the year. But with our secondary falling apart after week 14,
we need to use a very high first day pick in the draft on a Corner. If we do
trade McNabb, we can use one of our 1st round picks on a Corner (otherwise we
can use our 2nd round pick). The rookie can be brought along during the first
half of next season, and when ready/as needed, we can then move Sheldon to
Free Safety, giving us one of the best overall secondaries in football.
Lastly, we should Keep Dmitri Patterson around as our 5th corner...he played
solid.
FS: Macho Harris will be better after a full off-season practicing as
the Starter, but we can afford to see how things work out and if he doesn’t
get it done, we can move Sheldon to Starting FS when our rookie is ready. Some
combination of Quintin Demps and either a free agent or a 2nd day rookie
addition to the mix will back us up at Safety, as Sean Jones will surely
command more money then we will pay him and leave in free agency.
SS: Quintin Mikell had an up and down year, but he’s a very solid
player and one of the leaders on our defense. He will stay starting at Strong
safety, and Demps, a free agent, or the late round rookie will back him up.
SPECIAL TEAMS
K: David Akers is still the man for us, coming off a Pro-Bowl season
this year. He's got another 3 or 4 very good years left in him.
P: Sav Rocca had a pretty good year, but if any good free agent Punters
are available we should bring one in and at the very least create some
competition.
KR: Quintin Demps will resume his role here as our primary Kick
Returner, along with hopefully one of the players we draft. If we keep Ellis
Hobbs, he would be the main person here but that's unlikely.
PR: After making the Pro-Bowl and returning a few for TD's, we simply
can’t take Action Desean Jackson off of his Punt return duties. He is
too valuable and gamebreaking, plus he's dynamic enough to continue returning
punts and still be a great receiver (unlike Hester, Devin).
COACHING
Head Coach: Everyone knows how I feel about Fat Andy (*cough cough
http://www.AxeAndyReid.com cough
cough*), but the Eagles foolishly gave him a mid-season extension. And as
usual, he rewarded the team by getting everyone excited for a Superbowl run
and coming up short. Sadly, we’re stuck with him for the foreseeable
future...unless the Philly Cheesesteaks that he frequents take him down one
artery at a timel!!!!
Offensive Coordinator: FIRE MARTY MORNHINWEG NOW!!!! Supposedly he
might go to USC or a host of other places, I really don't care where he goes,
JUST ANYWHERE BUT HERE!!!! We need to bring in someone who will call a better
game and not abandon the run every 1st quarter when we go down by 3.
Defensive Coordinator: Overall Sean McDermott had a good first season
at the helm, replacing the late and legendary Jim Johnson. Sean will
only get better with time, and the future looks bright for our defense, who
hopefully will be much healthier next season.
Special Teams: We had one of the best Special Teams units in the league
this year, both returning the ball and covering opponents returns.
Special Teams Coordinator Ted Daisher did an awesome job and deserves a lot of
credit.

FREE AGENCY
Overall we don’t have any glaring holes, so unless we can sign a big-time
Corner or Safety the Eagles will probably be fairly quiet in Free Agency. We
could use a new punter if possible, but otherwise we can just focus on adding
quality depth and some competition for training camp. (Note: If we can
somehow make a run at WR Brandon Marshall...should he be released by
Denver...then he would be the 1 big name player I say we should go all out to
get. He was a headache at times in Denver, but we have the leadership to
deal with that and he's not selfish like T.O. was. Just imagine Marshall plus
Maclin at starting Wide Receiver, with Desean in the slot. Can you say
UNSTOPPABLE!!!!!)
